NGC 3576, also known as the Statue of Liberty Nebula or ESO 129-EN5, is a bright emission nebula in the constellation Carina. Lying about 9,000 light-years away in the Sagittarius arm of the Milky Way, this vast star-forming region stretches roughly 100 light-years across. It shines because intense ultraviolet radiation from newly formed massive stars ionizes the surrounding hydrogen gas, causing it to glow vividly. The nebula earned its nickname from the way its luminous ridges and pillars resemble the silhouette of the Statue of Liberty. Within the cloud, powerful stellar winds and radiation from young stars carve the gas and dust into intricate shapes, while denser pockets continue to collapse and give birth to new stars. NGC 3576 remains an active stellar nursery, where the cycle of star formation is still unfolding. Image credit: ESO / VPHAS+ Survey / CASU
