In a first, the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors have spotted a collision between a black hole (illustrated left) and a mystery object (right), which could be either the heaviest neutron star ever discovered or the lightest black hole.

Ripples in spacetime have revealed a distant collision between a black hole and a mystery object, which appears too massive to be a neutron star but not massive enough to be a black hole.
At first glance, the event — detected by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors on August 14, 2019 — looked like a collision between a black hole and neutron star (SN: 8/15/19). But a new analysis of the gravitational waves emanating from the merger tells a different story. It shows that a black hole about 23 times as massive as the sun crashed into a compact object of about 2.6 solar masses, researchers report June 23 in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
That 2.6-solar-mass object is heavier than the presumed 2.5-solar-mass cap on neutron star size. But it’s smaller than the most lightweight black hole ever observed, which is about five solar masses. “We have [here] either the heaviest known neutron star … or we have the lightest known black hole,” says Cole Miller, an astrophysicist at the University of Maryland in College Park not involved in the work.
Neutron stars, which are dense stellar remnants left behind by stellar explosions, are thought to max out at about 2.5 solar masses because any larger star is liable to crumple under its own weight. Black holes less than about five solar masses are theoretically possible, “we just have had no observational evidence of such low-mass black holes,” says coauthor Vicky Kalogera, an astrophysicist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. That could mean such objects are very rare, or that they’re just so difficult to spot that they’ve been overlooked in past searches.

Orbiting the gas giant, Saturn's moon Titan experiences the Saturnian seasons that are about 7 Earth-years long. Larger than inner planet Mercury, Titan was captured in this Cassini spacecraft image about two weeks after its northern summer began. The near-infrared view finds bright methane clouds drifting through Titan's dense, hazy atmosphere as seen from a distance of about 507,000 kilometers. Below the clouds, dark hydrocarbon lakes sprawl near its fully illuminated north pole.

Explanation: To some, it looks like a giant chicken running across the sky. To others, it looks like a gaseous nebula where star formation takes place. Cataloged as IC 2944, the Running Chicken Nebula spans about 100 light years and lies about 6,000 light years away toward the constellation of the Centaur (Centaurus). The featured image, shown in scientifically assigned colors, was captured recently in a 12-hour exposure. The star cluster Collinder 249 is visible embedded in the nebula's glowing gas. Although difficult to discern here, several dark molecular clouds with distinct shapes can be found inside the nebula.

Ο διάσημος Οθωμανός ναύαρχος και κουρσάρος Πίρι Ρέις (Pîrî Reis,1470-1554), υπήρξε μεγάλος γεωγράφος, είναι ο συγγραφέας μιας λεπτομερούς μελέτης για τη Μεσόγειο με τίτλο Κιτάμπ Μπαχρίγιε δηλαδή «το βιβλίο της θάλασσας». Λίγο πριν την Οθωμανική κατάκτηση το 1521 μας παρέδωσε μια πολύτιμη περιγραφή του νησιού με σημαντικές και αξιόπιστες πληροφορίες: Στο εδάφιο 29. (110b -111b) – αναφέρεται στο νησί της Κω.

ΠΩΣ ΕΙΔΕ ΤΟ ΝΗΣΙ Ο ΠΙΡΙ ΡΕΙΣ ΤΟΝ 16ο ΑΙΩΝΑ
Η Κως (Istanköy) είναι και ορεινός και πεδινός τόπος. Υπάρχουν πολλές ωραίες τοποθεσίες. Οι άπιστοι αποκαλούν το νησί Λόνκου, που σημαίνει «μακρύς». Και πραγματικά είναι ένα μακρόστενο νησί. Η περιφέρεια του είναι εβδομήντα περίπου μίλια. Υπάρχουν τέσσερα γερά κάστρα. Το πρώτο λέγεται Νάριντσε (η πόλη της Κω).Χτίστηκε στα βορειοανατολικά του νησιού απέναντι από την Ανατολία. Από το κάστρο ως τις ακτές της Ανατολίας είναι έξι μίλια. Το κάστρο φτιάχτηκε πάνω σε μια επίπεδη χαμηλή τοποθεσία. Έσκαψαν σ’ ένα μέρος και το’ καναν λιμάνι. Μπαίνουν πολύ μικρά πλοία, ενώ επειδή υπάρχουν αμμούδες δεν αράζουν οι γαλέρες. Και τα καΐκια μπαίνουν. Στις ακτές του λιμανιού υπάρχουν ωραία αμπέλια, περιβόλια και πηγάδια, καθώς και άφθονα πορτοκάλια, λεμόνια και άλλα φρούτα. Το δεύτερο κάστρο λέγεται Αντιμάχι (Αντιμάχεια). Χτίστηκε νότια του νησιού πάνω στο γκρεμό. Το τρίτο κάστρο λέγεται Κίφελος (Κέφαλος) κι είναι χτισμένο σε ύψωμα κατά τα νοτιοδυτικά. Το τέταρτο κάστρο λέγεται Μπίλι (Πυλί)και βρίσκεται στα βόρεια του νησιού. Εκτός από αυτό, εμπρός από την πόλη της Κω, δεν υπάρχει άλλο καλό αραξοβόλι. Εμπρός της μπορούν να αράξουν διακόσια με τριακόσια πλοία. Δυο μίλια περίπου βορειοδυτικά υπάρχει ένα χαμηλό αμμώδες ακρωτήρι, που είναι και αραξοβόλι. Τα νερά, όμως, στις τρεις πλευρές του ακρωτηρίου είναι ρηχά. Πρέπει να κινούνται κάπως προς τα ανοιχτά. Από τα βορειοδυτικά του ακρωτηρίου κατά τα δυτικά τα νερά προσφέρουν καλό αραξοβόλι. Υπάρχει, όμως, μια αμμούδα που πρέπει να την προσέχουν. Η στεριά στις ακτές είναι χαμηλή πεδιάδα. Είναι ωραία μέρη και τα νερά κατάλληλα για να αράζουν τις μέρες που φυσούν νότιοι άνεμοι. Νοτιοδυτικά υπάρχει ένα ψηλό βουνό, που από μακριά μοιάζει με νησί. Ανάμεσα στα βουνά, όμως, υπάρχουν πεδιάδες. Γι’ αυτό πολλοί σκέφτονται πως πρόκειται για νησί. Δεν είναι έτσι. Πρόκειται για ένα μόνο νησί. Περνώντας αυτές τις πεδιάδες και φτάνοντας κοντά στο μεγάλο βουνό υπάρχει το κάστρο Αντιμάχεια που βρίσκεται χτισμένο ψηλά πάνω από τη θάλασσα. Απέναντι του δέκα μίλια μακριά υπάρχει το νησί Ιντζιρλί(Νίσυρος). Μεταξύ τους βρίσκεται το μακρόστενο νησάκι Σακάρτζαλαρ (Γιαλί). Το λιμανάκι του βρίσκεται στα νότια. Νοτιοδυτικά του νησιού υπάρχει αμμούδα, ενώ βορειοανατολικά546ένα στρόγγυλο νησί, το Καλγιούρα (Καλόγερος).Εδώ παλιά κατοικούσαν μοναχοί. Είκοσι μίλια βορειοανατολικά του υπάρχει ένα ακρωτήρι στα νοτιοανατολικά της Κω. Τα νερά γύρω του προσφέρουν καλό αραξοβόλι. Είναι ωραία χαμηλά μέρη. Πιο κάτω έξι μίλια μακριά υπάρχει η πόλη της Κω. Από δω ως το κάστρο της Αλικαρνασσού είναι δέκα οχτώ μίλια. Σε τούτη την πορεία βρίσκονται δυο νησάκια εμπρός από το κάστρο Ασιούτ (Ισήνη, Ίασος). Τα μεγάλα πλοία περνούν ανάμεσα στα νησάκια. Εμπρός από το Ασιούτ υπάρχει άλλο ένα νησάκι. Τα νερά είναι ρηχά ανάμεσα σ’αυτό και τις ακτές της Ανατολίας. Τα καΐκια δεν περνούν από τα στενά μεταξύ του νησιού Σιγίρ (Κατσικονήσι) που βρίσκεται κοντά στο κάστρο της Αλικαρνασσού. Πρέπει να αποφεύγει κανείς αυτό το μέρος.

Explanation: What are those dark streaks in this composite image of yesterday's solar eclipse? They are reversed shadows of mountains at the edge of the Moon. The center image, captured from Xiamen, China, has the Moon's center directly in front of the Sun's center. The Moon, though, was too far from the Earth to completely block the entire Sun. Light that streamed around all of the edges of the Moon is called a ring of fire. Images at each end of the sequence show sunlight that streamed through lunar valleys. As the Moon moved further in front of the Sun, left to right, only the higher peaks on the Moon's perimeter could block sunlight. Therefore, the dark streaks are projected, distorted, reversed, and magnified shadows of mountains at the Moon's edge. Bright areas are called Bailey's Beads. Only a narrow swath across Earth's Eastern Hemisphere was able to see yesterday's full annular solar eclipse. Next June, though, a narrow swath across Earth's Northern Hemisphere will be able to see the next annular solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse will be visible at the bottom of the world near the end of this year.

Explanation: This telescopic close-up shows off the central regions of otherwise faint emission nebula IC 410, captured under backyard suburban skies with narrowband filters. It also features two remarkable inhabitants of the cosmic pond of gas and dust. Below and right of center are the tadpoles of IC 410. Partly obscured by foreground dust, the nebula itself surrounds NGC 1893, a young galactic cluster of stars. Formed in the interstellar cloud a mere 4 million years ago, the intensely hot, bright cluster stars energize the glowing gas. Composed of denser cooler gas and dust, the tadpoles are around 10 light-years long and are likely sites of ongoing star formation. Sculpted by stellar winds and radiation their heads are outlined by bright ridges of ionized gas while their tails trail away from the cluster's central young stars. IC 410 lies some 10,000 light-years away, toward the nebula-rich constellation Auriga.

The dramatic daytime sky is partly due to the black and white photo captured with a digital camera at near-infrared wavelengths. Taken at 3:22 p.m. EDT Saturday May 30 the launch was pretty dramatic too as a Falcon 9 rocket lofted a Crew Dragon spacecrat towards low-Earth orbit. Astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley were onboard, the first crew launched from a United States spaceport since the conclusion of the Space Shuttle Program in 2011. A few minutes after launch, the Falcon 9 first stage returned to land on Of Course I Still Love You (that's an autonomous spaceport drone ship ...) patiently waiting off the Florida coast. The two astronauts guided their craft to a successfull docking with the International Space Station’s Harmony module at 10:16 a.m. EDT Sunday May 31.

Explanation: Transfusing sunlight through a darkened sky, this beautiful display of noctilucent clouds was captured earlier this week, reflected in calm waters from Nykobing Mors, Denmark. From the edge of space, about 80 kilometers above Earth's surface, the icy clouds themselves still reflect sunlight, though the Sun is below the horizon as seen from the ground. Usually spotted at high latitudes in summer months the night shining clouds have made an early appearance this year as northern nights grow short. Also known as polar mesopheric clouds they are understood to form as water vapor driven into the cold upper atmosphere condenses on the fine dust particles supplied by disintegrating meteors or volcanic ash. NASA's AIM mission provides daily projections of noctilucent clouds as seen from space.

Explanation: NGC 2359 is a helmet-shaped cosmic cloud with wing-like appendages popularly called Thor's Helmet. Heroically sized even for a Norse god, Thor's Helmet is about 30 light-years across. In fact, the helmet is more like an interstellar bubble, blown as a fast wind from the bright, massive star near the bubble's center inflates a region within the surrounding molecular cloud. Known as a Wolf-Rayet star, the central star is an extremely hot giant thought to be in a brief, pre-supernova stage of evolution. NGC 2359 is located about 15,000 light-years away in the constellation of the Great Overdog. The remarkably sharp image is a mixed cocktail of data from broadband and narrowband filters using three different telescopes. It captures natural looking stars and the details of the nebula's filamentary structures. The predominant bluish hue is strong emission from doubly ionized oxygen atoms in the glowing gas.

Explanation: What role do magnetic fields play in interstellar physics? Analyses of observations by ESA's Planck satellite of emission by small magnetically-aligned dust grains reveal previously unknown magnetic field structures in our Milky Way Galaxy -- as shown by the curvy lines in the featured full-sky image. The dark red shows the plane of the Milky Way, where the concentration of dust is the highest. The huge arches above the plane are likely remnants of past explosive events from our Galaxy's core, conceptually similar to magnetic loop-like structures seen in our Sun's atmosphere. The curvy streamlines align with interstellar filaments of neutral hydrogen gas and provide tantalizing evidence that magnetic fields may supplement gravity in not only in shaping the interstellar medium, but in forming stars. How magnetism affected our Galaxy's evolution will likely remain a topic of research for years to come.

Astronomy Picture of the Day: A Ring of Fire Sunrise Solar Eclipse

Explanation: What's rising above the horizon behind those clouds? It's the Sun. Most sunrises don't look like this, though, because most sunrises don't include the Moon. In the early morning of 2013 May 10, however, from Western Australia, the Moon was between the Earth and the rising Sun. At times, it would be hard for the uninformed to understand what was happening. In an annular eclipse, the Moon is too far from the Earth to block the entire Sun, and at most leaves a ring of fire where sunlight pours out around every edge of the Moon. The featured time-lapse video also recorded the eclipse through the high refraction of the Earth's atmosphere just above the horizon, making the unusual rising Sun and Moon appear also flattened. As the video continues on, the Sun continues to rise, and the Sun and Moon begin to separate. This weekend, a new annular solar eclipse will occur, visible from central Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and a narrow band across Asia, with much of Earth's Eastern hemisphere being able to see a partial solar eclipse.

Explanation: Big, beautiful, barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300 lies some 70 million light-years away on the banks of the constellation Eridanus. This Hubble Space Telescope composite view of the gorgeous island universe is one of the largest Hubble images ever made of a complete galaxy. NGC 1300 spans over 100,000 light-years and the Hubble image reveals striking details of the galaxy's dominant central bar and majestic spiral arms. In fact, on close inspection the nucleus of this classic barred spiral itself shows a remarkable region of spiral structure about 3,000 light-years across. Like other spiral galaxies, including our own Milky Way, NGC 1300 is thought to have a supermassive central black hole.

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Journey into the Cosmic Reef

Explanation: What would you see if you could fly into the Cosmic Reef? The nebular cloud NGC 2014 appear to some like an ocean reef that resides in the sky, specifically in the LMC, the largest satellite galaxy of our Milky Way Galaxy. A detailed image of this distant nebula was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope to help commemorate 30 years of investigating the cosmos. Data and images of this cosmic reef have been combined into the three-dimensional model flown through in the featured video. The computer animated sequence first takes you past a star cluster highlighted by bright blue stars, below pillars of gas and dust slowly being destroyed by the energetic light and winds emitted by these massive stars. Filaments of gas and dust are everywhere, glowing in the red light of hydrogen and nitrogen. The animation next takes you to the blue-colored nebula NGC 2020, glowing in light emitted by oxygen and surrounding a Wolf-Rayet star about 200,000 times brighter than our Sun -- a nebula thought to be the ejected outer atmosphere of this stellar monster. As the animation concludes, the virtual camera pivots to show that NGC 2020 has a familiar hourglass shape when viewed from the side.
