New record! Astronomers nail down distance to the earliest galaxy yet

Astronomers using the MOSFIRE infrared spectrograph at the Keck I telescope in Hawaii have determined the redshift to the galaxy EGS-zs8-1 to be 7.73, which makes it the most distant galaxy ever observed. The galaxy was first found in two surveys, one called CANDELS; the other called, more whimsically, BoRG/HIPPIES.
