Astronomy Picture of the Day: Oceans inside icy moons managed to "survive" giant collisions!

Black Hole

Subsurface oceans on icy worlds have proven more resilient to cosmic catastrophes than one might think. Computer simulations show that they can persist even after a devastating collision—though certainly not on every moon. ⠀ Many moons of the Solar System's giant planets have undergone major collisions. Scientists hypothesize, for instance, that Uranus's moon system may have been drastically altered by the giant impact that tilted the planet itself. Saturn's moons, meanwhile, may have been destroyed and subsequently reassembled from the resulting debris. Yet, some of these icy bodies—including Mimas, Enceladus, Dione, Miranda, and Ariel—may harbor subsurface oceans of liquid water. But what exactly happens to the ocean if its icy moon survives a catastrophic collision? Theoretically, the heat generated by the impact could melt the ice. However, such a catastrophe simultaneously alters the moon's internal structure, allowing it to lose heat more rapidly. To answer this question, Marc Neveu of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and his colleagues combined collision models with calculations regarding the long-term thermal evolution of moons. To do this, the researchers examined icy moons of two different sizes. In the first scenario, a moon with a radius of 500 kilometers collided with a body half its size. In the second, a larger moon with a radius of 1,000 kilometers was struck by a body with a radius of 500 kilometers. The scientists then tracked how the moon—reassembled from debris—evolved over billions of years following the impact and compared it to a similar moon that had avoided such a catastrophe. ⠀ It turned out that size was the decisive factor: within a large moon, the ocean survived the collision. Moreover, the heat generated by the impact melted a significant portion of the icy shell, thereby increasing the volume of liquid water. Such a vast ocean persisted for approximately two billion years. The situation is different for smaller moons. A collision altered their internal structure: rocky material sank into the interior, while water was pushed closer to the cold surface, where it froze more rapidly. Consequently, an ocean that might have persisted for about a billion years in the absence of a collision failed to form at all following the impact. Scientists also investigated whether a collision alone could transform a completely frozen satellite into an ocean world. This did not occur in any of the models. Even a slight orbital shift following the impact did not help; the associated tidal heating proved insufficient to melt the ice. Thus, collisions alone could not create an ocean where none had existed before. Their consequences depended on the moon's size: for large satellites, the additional heat helped an existing ocean persist longer, whereas for small moons, the restructuring of the interior prevented an ocean from forming. The study's findings have been published in the journal *Nature Astronomy*. Researchers proposed testing this scenario using specific satellites of gas giants. One candidate is Rhea, a moon of Saturn with a radius of approximately 760 kilometers. According to one theory, this celestial body may have formed from debris following a massive collision. Modeling such an impact will reveal whether it could have heated the moon's interior sufficiently to trigger the formation of a subsurface ocean.

Astronomy Picture of the Day: The Pinwheel Galaxy!

#NASA, #Space, #astronomy, #διάστημα

Black Hole

The Pinwheel Galaxy looks almost too perfect: a vast face-on spiral, arms like a clock face, only 21 million light-years away. Everything seemed long since catalogued. Then Chandra pulled out objects that refuse to play by the rules. They barely glow in ordinary hard X-rays. Instead they flicker faintly in the softest, lowest-energy band — and models say they blaze in extreme ultraviolet. Researchers named them hypersoft X-ray sources. Seven sit in M101; across six nearby galaxies the count reached 84, and later grew further. The mix is odd. Soft X-rays usually mark shock waves or hot gas. Bright ultraviolet usually marks young hot stars or disks around compact objects. Here both signals appear at once, and the X-ray part is only a thin tail of what is probably pouring out in extreme UV that we cannot see. Interstellar hydrogen and helium swallow that light almost completely, so only a faint X-ray leak reaches Earth. Chandra caught it only because someone finally looked low enough in the archive. The sources sit both in spiral arms where stars are born and among the older stars of elliptical galaxies. That points to a whole family rather than one type: white dwarfs quietly stealing gas from a companion, leftovers of nova eruptions, perhaps modestly hungry black holes or neutron stars. What matters is that they speak two languages at once — X-ray and ultraviolet. That is why they are being asked to help with two old puzzles. How gas heats and cools in star-forming regions. Where the faint but persistent X-ray glow of galactic disks comes from, and what ionizes helium where known sources fall short. Hypersoft objects may be the missing piece: not rare curiosities, but a hidden population that for a quarter-century no one knew how to look for. On the image released 9 September 2026 the Pinwheel no longer looks like just a pretty spiral. It looks like a stage where sources whisper in X-rays and shout in ultraviolet we almost never see.

Astronomy Picture of the Day: GJ 3090 b: Its orbit is tilted 136 degrees from the star’s equator, opposite to the spin of its sun!

#NASA, #Space, #astronomy, #διάστημα
Black Hole

Most planets are well-behaved. They form in the same spinning disk as their star and then obediently circle in the same direction the star itself rotates. Our own solar system follows that rule, with only a gentle few-degree tilt. GJ 3090 b does not. This sub-Neptune—about 2.2 times Earth’s radius and 4.5 times its mass—circles a cool red dwarf and travels the wrong way. Its orbit is tilted 136 degrees from the star’s equator, meaning the planet is moving retrograde: opposite to the spin of its sun. Astronomers spotted the transit with TESS, then used the infrared spectrograph NIRPS to weigh the planet and map the geometry of its path. The measurement was a shock. Only a handful of multi-planet systems show such extreme misalignment, and those usually have a massive companion that could have flung the planet into its rebellious orbit. GJ 3090 has no such bully in sight. One leading idea is that the star once swallowed a second, already-misaligned disk of gas and dust. The planets that later formed inside that rogue disk inherited its backward spin. Whatever the cause, the little world is now a living reminder that planetary systems can be far messier—and far more defiant—than the tidy picture we once assumed. What’s happening in the picture The red dwarf spins one way. Its planet travels the opposite way on a steeply tilted orbit. No giant companion is visible that could have kicked the planet into this backward path, so astronomers suspect the star once captured a second, already-tilted disk in which the planet later formed. The result is a rare “rebellious” world that refuses to follow the usual rules of planetary architecture.
