Amber Rudd, the UK's energy secretary, has announced that the country will eliminate all of its coal plants within 10 years. That's a step forward from the previous government's plan to significantly reduce the number of coal plants by 2025. Currently, 30% of the country's electricity is generated by coal plants but it has fallen by more than 50% over the last 25 years. Most of the slack is expected to be picked up by gas power plants in the short term and Rudd appears to favor nuclear plants for the long term. Earlier this year, the government eliminated most of its subsidies for onshore wind and solar plants.
