The image shows the globular star cluster Caldwell 87, also known as NGC 1261.
It is located approximately 50,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Horologium.
The cluster was discovered in 1826 by astronomer James Dunlop.
It has an apparent magnitude of 8.3 and requires a small telescope to be spotted in the night sky.
The cluster is best observed during late spring from the Southern Hemisphere.
