The galaxy NGC 474 is literally being torn apart by the tidal influences of a spiral galaxy (they can be seen behind and directly above it in this image). This galaxy's appearance is a direct result of its collisions with other galaxies. The shells surrounding it are tidal "tails" made up of the remnants of many smaller galaxies it has absorbed over the past billion years. Such a turbulent past!
