Today marks 75 years since the discovery of carbon-14!

Carbon-14 is a well-known tool to date organic matter — from bones and ash, to ancient linen and mummies.

Though carbon-14 is a naturally occurring radioisotope, it wasn’t until this day in 1940 that Martin Kamen and Sam Ruben synthesized it with a cyclotron. Using carbon-14 for radiocarbon dating, however, wasn’t developed until 1949.
