The mass-energy scale associated with gravity lies 17 orders of magnitude beyond the scale of the known particles, including the Higgs boson, which bestows mass on those particle. Explaining that gap, which goes by the name of the hierarchy problem, is one of the biggest challenges in physics. Quanta magazine's Natalie Wolchover reports on a new and promising approach to solve it.

Three physicists have proposed a new solution to one of the deepest mysteries in particle physics: why the Higgs boson has such a tiny mass.
