Wayward satellites repurposed to test general relativity

A pair of satellites that ended up in the wrong orbits are going to be used for the most sensitive test for general relativity yet. The two satellites were intended to be part of the European "Galileo" GPS system, but they ended up in elliptical orbits instead of circular orbits because of a launch malfunction. However, the atomic clocks on-board the satellites can be used to measure the effect of Earth's gravity as their orbits bring them closer and farther from Earth by comparing the speed of the clocks with the satellites' altitudes (measured by ground-based lasers).

Scientists will use wonky orbit to test Einstein’s theories.
