Euro NCAP Boosts Safety Rating with AEB Pedestrian Systems

From 2016, Euro NCAP will expand its safety rating by including autonomous emergency braking (AEB) technology for pedestrians. Vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, account for almost half of Europe’s total road deaths. Research has shown that the fitment of effective pedestrian detection systems on passenger cars could prevent one in five fatal pedestrian collisions.
Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) functions use lasers, radar and/or cameras to detect the imminent collision, perform an effective emergency stop or reduce the impact speed significantly. With more and more vehicles offering this technology, Euro NCAP’s new tests will make it simpler for consumers and manufacturers to find out which systems work best.
