23 Aug 1939: USSR and Germany sign the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, aka the German–Soviet Non-Aggression Pact. 

It included a secret protocol dividing Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and Romania into #German and #Soviet spheres of influence.
