These graceful, dense clouds of gas and dust are located in the Running Chicken Nebula, or IC 2948, in the constellation Centaurus—one of the star-forming regions in the Milky Way. The gas in the nebula is ionized by radiation from young stars, which, along with stellar winds, gives the dense clouds their intricate shapes, gradually eroding them. This image covers an area less than a third the size of the full Moon and was taken by the VST Survey Telescope in Chile.
