This iconic image from the Viking 1 spacecraft, taken back in 1976, shows a thin layer of Mars's tenuous atmosphere at the edge of the planet. The large crater in the center-left is Galle Crater (not to be confused with Gale Crater, where the Curiosity rover is currently located). And on the right are the mountains of the southern Argyre Planitia.
