Astronomy Picture Of The Day: Mercury is not the hottest planet!

Many people think that the hottest planet in the Solar System is Mercury because it is the closest to the Sun. However, this is one of the most common space myths. Mercury does receive more sunlight than any other planet. During the day, its surface temperature can rise up to about +430°C. But Mercury has almost no atmosphere to retain heat. As a result, once the Sun sets, the temperature drops dramatically to around −180°C. The true record holder is Venus. Venus has a very thick atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide. This creates an extremely strong greenhouse effect. Heat becomes trapped under this dense atmospheric “blanket” and cannot escape into space. Because of this, the temperature on Venus stays around +465°C across its entire surface, both day and night. So, distance from the Sun is not the only factor that determines a planet’s temperature. The atmosphere plays a far more important role — and in this case, it makes Venus the hottest planet in the Solar System.
