On this day in 1957 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was founded. Partly the brain child of President Eisenhower's administration, the IAEA was set up to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons.
The organization organizes training sessions for the civilian nuclear agencies so that they can better maintain and monitor nuclear reactors, promotes cross border knowledge transfer, and has inspectors that monitor the countries who have signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, to make sure they are not developing nuclear weapons.
A less well known aspect of its work involves research into improving human health through nuclear science. For example, helping to eliminate the Teste fly in Africa (see https://www.iaea.org/…/tsetse-fly-eradication-project-seneg… ).
Although the IAEA is independent of the United Nations, it does report both to the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council.
