The “Day of Rage” convened on 10 August was orchestrated by pro-Palestinian groups, spearheaded by March to Gaza Greece and BDS Greece, in coordination with the Palestinian community in Greece. The initiative encompassed pro-Palestinian demonstrations at approximately one hundred sites across the country, including Piraeus, Patras, Thessaloniki, and several islands such as Mykonos, Santorini, and Syros.
An assessment of the participants in the 10 August events indicates affiliations leading to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. While the activities in Greece may outwardly appear independent, non-violent, and unconnected to extremist actors, closer scrutiny of the network of relationships reveals a direct linkage between March to Gaza Greece and its principal coordinator in Greece, Paris Laftsis, and Saif Abukeshek, the global coordinator of the March to Gaza initiative. Abukeshek monitors March to Gaza Greece through his Instagram account, while Laftsis reciprocally follows Abukeshek’s account.
Abukeshek maintains connections with a range of individuals worldwide (not all of whom are reflected in the mapping presented below), including Yahia Sarri, a prominent cleric in Algeria with direct ties to Hamas and membership in a religious body in Algeria affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. Together, Abukeshek and Sarri organized a march of thousands of activists from Cairo toward the Rafah Crossing. The convoy was halted by Egyptian authorities, and approximately two hundred activists were detained. Both Abukeshek and Laftsis were themselves arrested during the same incident by Egyptian authorities, though it remains unclear whether they were detained simultaneously or held in the same facility.
Since August, the global March to Gaza initiative, under Abukeshek’s leadership, together with March to Gaza Greece, has actively promoted the activities of the Global Sumud Flotilla. The declared aim of this initiative is to dispatch dozens of vessels to “break the blockade” of the Gaza Strip. Abukeshek serves on the steering committee of the Global Sumud Flotilla, alongside other committee members who also maintain direct ties to Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).
