This is the largest "stellar nursery" (spanning a thousand light-years) in the Local Group of galaxies; a colossal molecular cloud once existed here, giving birth to a whole generation of young stars, while others are still in the process of forming. The Tarantula Nebula is home to some of the hottest and most massive stars known—some millions of times brighter than the Sun. The intense radiation from these massive, pale-blue stars disperses clouds of gas and dust and causes them to glow, creating a bubble of empty space at the center that is visible even to us from a neighboring galaxy. The further one moves from the region of hot, young stars, the denser the clouds of gas and dust become—material driven here by the stellar winds of those massive luminaries. Here, the gas takes on a rust-like hue, signaling to astronomers that the nebula is rich in complex hydrocarbons. This dense gas is the raw material from which future stars will form.
