Today, 15 December, 1852 Henri Becquerel was born.
We take for granted our knowledge of radioactivity and the countless ways it is put to beneficial uses. But until the end of the 19th century the world did not even know it existed.
Becquerel was a French physicist who discovered radioactivity. Experiments he conducted in 1896 , shortly after the discovery of X-rays, observed penetrating radiation coming from uranium salts. His ground-breaking work earned him a share of the 1903 Nobel Prize, and today the Becquerel (Bq), defines the activity of an amount of radioactive material and has a place in the International System of Units (SI).
