Astronomy Picture Of The Day: Antennae galaxies in a galactic spectacle!!!

#NASA, #Space, #astronomy, #διάστημα

A stunning composite image from NASA's Great Observatories showcases the Antennae galaxies in a galactic spectacle. This image combines X-ray data from Chandra in blue, optical data from Hubble in gold and brown, and infrared data from Spitzer in red. Supernova explosions are enriching the intergalactic gas with essential elements like oxygen, iron, and silicon, which will form new generations of stars and planets. The Antennae galaxies, located about 62 million light years from Earth, are captured in this beautiful new release. Their name derives from the long, antenna-like arms created by tidal forces during the collision. The ongoing collision, which started over 100 million years ago, has sparked the formation of millions of stars in dense clouds of dust and gas. The most massive young stars have rapidly evolved and exploded as supernovas within a few million years. Chandra's X-ray image reveals vast clouds of hot interstellar gas infused with elements from these supernova remnants. Bright point-like sources in the image indicate material accreting onto black holes and neutron stars, some of which may have masses nearly 100 times that of the Sun. Spitzer's infrared data highlight warm dust clouds heated by newborn stars, with the brightest regions in the overlapping area between the two galaxies, while Hubble shows old stars, star-forming regions, and dust filaments.
