NGC 3521 is a flocculent spiral galaxy, which means that it does not have continuous spiral arms; its spiral is formed by numerous irregular segments.
It is inside a bubble formed by shells of faint, gigantic stars, probably the remains of small galaxies that were absorbed.
It is easy to see, located in the constellation Leo about 35 million light-years away, just a stone's throw away.
