Astronomy Picture of the Day: The Statue of Liberty Nebula

The Statue of Liberty Nebula is a bright emission nebula in the constellation of Carina. It's about 100 light-years across at a distance of about 9,000 light-years. There's prolific star formation occurring in this nebula and because of this, there are many hot, young, massive stars which produce huge amounts of ultraviolet light ionizing the nebula. Also the stellar winds from these massive stars cause some of the looping filaments and their ultraviolet radiation energizes the HA, OIII, and SII making it a very colorful target.
