On this day in 1972 NASA's Apollo 16 mission launched toward the Moon. The mission was the penultimate in the Apollo program. Although it did not include any new equipment, it was the first to land in the lunar highlands region and it was notable for its geological focus. In preparation for the mission, astronauts John Young and Charles Duke trained in the Grand Canyon. They returned with 96 kg of lunar samples.
