Astronomy Picture of the Day: The Galactic Dance: Arp 245!

Black Hole Two galaxies are locked in a slow, billion-year waltz. NGC 2992 and NGC 2993 have drawn so close that gravity has begun to tear at their outer edges, stretching a luminous bridge of gas, dust, and stars between them. This is Arp 245 — a pair of galaxies in the midst of a gravitational embrace, 105 million light-years away. What looks like a violent collision is, in reality, far more elegant. The space between individual stars is so immense that they almost never crash into one another. Instead, the galaxies’ gas clouds slam together and compress, igniting furious bursts of star formation. Those newborn stars burn bright blue along the connecting bridge and within the distorted arms — the visible signature of creation sparked by chaos. It is a reminder that even the grandest disruptions in the universe can be deeply generative. Out of the tidal forces that warp and pull these galaxies apart, new stars are born, and the system slowly reshapes itself into something new.
