Black Hole
If the Tarantula Nebula sat where Orion does, it would cast shadows on Earth. About 170,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud, Caldwell 103 is the most active stellar nursery in our galactic neighborhood. It holds some of the most massive stars ever found. Their radiation and winds carve the gas into filaments, cavities, and glowing clouds of hydrogen and oxygen, a factory that is still building stars and already preparing its heaviest ones for supernova. This mosaic, released for Hubble’s 22nd anniversary, combines Hubble observations with data from the European Southern Observatory. It remains one of the largest and most detailed views of the region, a nearby lesson in how massive stars form and how their light reshapes a galaxy. Image credit: NASA, ESA, ESO
