As a reminder, the Rosetta probe approached the comet in late 2014 and deployed the Philae lander, which successfully touched down, detected water and amino acids, and snapped some photos. The comet has such a strange shape because it formed from the merger of two celestial bodies. Its axis of rotation passes through the narrow neck connecting its two sections.
