The Prime Minister’s Office has now confirmed that Israel struck Syria after Damascus moved toward allowing Turkish forces to deploy at the Abu al-Duhur airbase near Aleppo. According to the PMO, Israel and Syria had agreed to maintain a security status quo, and Jerusalem repeatedly warned Damascus that a Turkish military deployment at the base would constitute a threat to Israel. Syria ignored the warnings. The message from Jerusalem: “Israel will not tolerate threats to its security and would welcome a return to the status quo.” Syrian media reported eight Israeli airstrikes on the airbase, hitting its runway and storage facilities.
